The Red Lake Public School District board adopted the 2027–28 school calendar on March 25 after a final reading presenting a calendar similar to the current year: a start after Labor Day, Spring Break around Easter and a last student day on May 25 with graduation the same day.
Administrators explained the calendar is not immutable and can be adjusted later. Board members asked whether the district could use e‑learning days in lieu of makeup days to reduce end‑of‑year extensions. Discussion cited multiple constraints: the district would need devices for students to use at home, risks of device damage or loss, limited internet access in parts of the district, higher payroll cost for staff on e‑learning days, and mixed evidence of e‑learning effectiveness in Minnesota.
"It will come with a pretty big price tag because we'll have to make sure we have devices for every student to go home and then they lose those devices or break them or get them damaged," a board member said. Another member noted the state experience that e‑learning days often produced limited learning benefits.
The board voted to adopt the calendar by motion and voice vote. The board directed staff to continue exploring options and to return with information if the district wants to pursue e‑learning days in the future; no immediate change to the adopted calendar was made.
