Superintendent reports blizzard closures, seeks 180-day waiver; committee approves letter backing funding-formula review and hears field update

Burrillville's superintendent reported to the school committee on March 10 that a recent historic blizzard forced three days of school closure and that district staff have been coordinating cleanup and safety efforts with town officials.
"The commissioner is requesting a waiver of the required 180-day school requirement," the superintendent said, explaining that if the state approves the waiver the district could avoid making up two storm-related days and keep the planned last day of school (the superintendent said the last day could be June 18 if the waiver is granted; if not, the last day could move later).
The superintendent also said committee members are invited to a March 11 town council meeting to review Burrillville's legislative priorities and that the committee had drafted a letter of support for recommended changes to the state funding formula. The committee later voted to approve a letter of support for the blue ribbon commission's report; Chair Lucy said she would send the approved letter to the governor and to state legislators.
On facilities, committee members received an update that the artificial turf field project is complete and is expected to open for spring sports; the town is purchasing and installing a new scoreboard and a formal grand opening will be planned for the season.
The meeting also received Resolution 2026-01 in support of House Bill 7356 and Senate Bill 2216 on school employee background checks and moved that correspondence to file.
