Council recommends approval of Rotary Club special‑event liquor license despite public safety concern

The San Luis Frontera Rotary Club asked the San Luis City Council to recommend approval of a special‑event liquor license for its Wild West Casino Night fundraiser scheduled for May 1, 2026. Parks Director Angelica Roldan spoke on behalf of the Rotary Club and said proceeds support scholarships.
"The Rotary Club is always willing to help our community," Roldan said, asking council for the recommendation.
James Allen Jr., a public commenter, said he was concerned that events serving alcohol can lead to injuries or DUIs and urged organizers and the city to ensure safety protocols. "My biggest concern is...when someone gets injured or someone's wind up with a DUI, it shows that we're not monitoring the event to keep our residents safe," Allen said.
After hearing from the applicant and the public, the council voted to recommend approval to the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control. The recommendation is advisory to the state agency, which issues or denies special‑event liquor licenses under state law.
