Council directs study of electrical options for Ski Run market, asks staff to explore mobile battery systems

Public Works presented a status report on efforts to provide permanent electrical service at the Ski Run Farmers Market site. The department reported it had opened service applications with Liberty Utilities but had not completed detailed design or paid for utility design work. Staff said a service cabinet and meter drop could cost in the tens of thousands; trenching and a distribution system across the shared-use path to vendor locations could push the cost toward engineering-level estimates roughly in the low hundreds of thousands.
Staff outlined constraints: limited physical locations for a service drop, snow and weather exposure to distribution outlets, ongoing maintenance and the lack of a city mechanism to recover ongoing electricity usage from vendors. Public Works recommended further work only if there is demonstrated demand and a plan to recover maintenance and energy costs.
Council discussed lower-cost alternatives and portable battery/solar-powered trailers that can provide shore power for events. Council directed staff to research mobile battery-storage and towable power-station solutions that could be deployed to Ski Run and other event locations (live-at-Lakeview), identify costs, charging/recharging logistics and possible partnerships or storage locations for recharging between events. The motion carried unanimously.
