Board approves consent agenda, trip requests and hires three new teachers

The Northville Public Schools Board of Education adopted its meeting agenda and approved its consent items, including minutes and several overnight and out-of-state field trips, then voted to hire three probationary teachers for the 2025–26 school year.
On the consent calendar the board approved minutes from the March 10, 2026 regular and closed sessions and field trips presented in item 5C: NHS Business Professionals of America conference in Nashville (May 6–10, 2026); a Hillside Middle School sixth-grade trip to Camp Hopeic in Fenton, Michigan (Oct. 21–23, 2026); and an NHS football camp in Bluffton, Ohio (July 14–16, 2026). The consent motion was moved and seconded and carried on an affirmative voice vote.
Later in the meeting the board approved motion 97 to award one-year prorated probationary NEA contracts for the 2025–26 school year to three candidates recommended by the central office: Macy Bernett (special-education, ASD specialist; noted earlier as having student-teaching and ASD experience and an M.S. in curriculum and instruction from Eastern Michigan University), Lauren Spalding (secondary English, experience as instructional coach and department chair; master’s from Michigan State University), and Melissa Dowy (special education, previously worked in Harrison schools and held a master’s in special education from Oakland University). The board voted in favor; no members registered opposition during the voice vote.
Superintendent Dr. Weber and the administrative team introduced each candidate, summarizing experience and reference checks. Trustees welcomed the hires and noted the challenges of recruiting teachers, particularly special-education staff, late in the hiring cycle.
No public comments were offered at the designated public-comment time. President Karen Meyer adjourned the meeting at 8:17 p.m.
