The Murfreesboro City Council on March 5 approved a purchase of 100 patrol carbine rifles and associated accessories for $258,008.55, to be paid from violent‑crime grant funds.
Chief Bowen told the council the department tested multiple systems and determined the Psyonix package — which includes weapons, lights, sights and slings — was the lowest responsible bid and provided the capabilities the department seeks. He said the purchase would allow the department to equip officers progressively and was enabled by the city’s Pelham Range facility.
The procurement was presented during the council’s consent and procurement items and the council called the roll to approve the purchase. No council debate on policy or civil‑liberty concerns was recorded during the public meeting.
The item was presented as a package purchase; Chief Bowen described the cost as covering the full equipment set and said funding comes from a violent‑crime grant rather than the city’s general fund. The council moved, seconded and approved the motion during the meeting.
Next procedural step: the contract paperwork will be executed by staff and the department will proceed with delivery and inventory under existing purchasing procedures.
