Board approves student-led prescribed prairie burn with tribal partners

The Shakopee Public Schools board voted to approve a planned prescribed prairie burn on district grounds after students and staff described the project as a hands-on environmental learning opportunity conducted in partnership with the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.

Students and Sun Club members outlined the burn’s educational goals and logistics. Macy, a student presenter, described the event as “a great demonstration of practice that the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux community does on their own prairies,” saying it would connect students with indigenous land-management practices and serve as a field trip for environmental pathway classes. Educator Ed Loesch and Mr. Lizotte explained that the tribe’s leadership council had already approved the plan and that the district would complete legal and safety steps before proceeding.

Board members asked about timing, notifications, and safety. The group said the district plans to coordinate communications so residents are not alarmed by smoke, and that Ken Christian, the district security coordinator, will be involved in on-site preparations. A tentative date mentioned during the meeting was April 10, subject to change depending on coordination between district staff and tribal partners.

Board member Prokopius moved to approve the prescribed burn agreement; Johnson seconded the motion. The chair called for ayes and the motion carried.

The board’s approval authorizes staff to finalize agreements, schedule the burn in consultation with tribal and safety partners, and prepare public communications. The leadership council’s prior sign-off and the district’s stated coordination steps were cited repeatedly during discussion.
