Community group cleared to fundraise $30,000-plus to revitalize Mountain City Little League field

The board heard a presentation from Jamie Roberts, speaking for the coalition, who described a package of improvements including drainage work, a rebuilt infield, magnetic safety bases, an 8-by-4 scoreboard, portable aluminum benches, dugout roof materials and a donated portable restroom. Roberts told the board, “We’re estimating this project... it’s going to exceed $30,000.” He said the coalition will raise all funds and the school system would not provide money for the work.
Board members asked about field specifications and possible use for travel‑team practices; Roberts said the field will be built to Little League regulation for youth play and would remain a school facility after the work is complete. The presenter also requested placement of a donor recognition plaque and his group’s name beneath the scoreboard; the board did not object.
After brief discussion, a board member moved to allow the coalition to proceed with fundraising; the motion was seconded and approved by roll call with all members voting yes.
The coalition said construction would occur after the school year ends so work will not interrupt classes. Roberts said the group had consulted school staff (naming Mr. Henley and Mr. Crumbley) and would coordinate project timing and oversight with district personnel.
Next steps: the coalition will continue its fundraising and return to the district with implementation details as needed; the board’s vote gave the coalition formal permission to solicit funds and proceed with planning.
