Santa Fe ISD board unanimously names Nelson facility the Butler Gym

The Santa Fe Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously April 23 to rename the Santa Fe Junior High auxiliary facility formerly known as Nelson Gym the "Butler Gym." The board moved, seconded and approved the naming after the facilities naming committee recommended that the district bring the request to the full board.
The request was introduced by district staff under the district's CW Local facilities-naming policy and supported at the meeting by community member Dean Evans, who told trustees the Butler family had been active in the district since the 1950s and met the committee's criteria for sustained service. "Considering everything the Butler family has done for this community, I think this is kind of a no-brainer for the board," said a trustee during the discussion.
Dr. Bot described the district's naming process and the committee's unanimous recommendation to bring the request to the board. Dean Evans and multiple community members described long-standing contributions to the district's athletics and volunteer efforts and asked the board to approve the name as recognition of that service. One speaker recounted local memories tied to the facility and emphasized the family's multi-generational involvement in coaching and community activities.
A trustee moved to approve the request to name the SFJH auxiliary gym (Nelson Gym) "Butler Gym." The motion was seconded and, following brief supportive remarks from other trustees, the board voted unanimously to adopt the new name. Trustees invited Butler family members to the front for photographs following the vote.
The action was purely honorary and does not, by itself, change facility operations or budgets. The board did not discuss a schedule or budget for new signage during the public motion but acknowledged staff would coordinate recognition details and photos in the near term.
