Rockville Centre celebrates winter sports: boys basketball wins county title, district earns scholar‑athlete distinction

The Board of Education opened its March 26 work session by recognizing fall and winter athletic teams and individual honorees across the Rockville Centre Union Free School District. Mr. Maguire led the recognitions and said the district earned its sixth consecutive designation as a "scholar athlete school of distinction," with the varsity teams collectively posting cumulative averages of 90 or higher.
Highlights announced included the boys varsity basketball team's 20–3 regular‑season record (13–1 in conference) and a Class Double A Nassau County Championship; the team advanced in playoffs with wins over Long Beach, Manhasset and Roslyn High School. Individual county honors named during the presentation included Conference Double A3 Player of the Year John Pericolosi and several All‑County and All‑Conference athletes. The South Side girls varsity basketball team finished 14–0 in league play and advanced to the Class Double A semifinal, with multiple players earning county recognitions.
Coaches for the honored teams were introduced and applauded. The board thanked Mr. Maguire and the coaches and extended congratulations to all student athletes, managers and families. The recognitions were delivered at the start of the public work session and were followed by Superintendent Gavin’s budget presentation.
