Board recognizes Puxen football, youth honorees and public‑safety communications accreditation

The board read a citation honoring Puxen High School’s 2025 MPSSAA 1A state football championship, acknowledged coaches and student athletes and posed for photographs. Commissioners also accepted a proclamation from the Optimist Club designating March 9–15, 2026 as Youth Appreciation Week and invited selected students from Calvert, Huntington, Northern and Puxen high schools to introduce themselves.
Public Safety recognized Calvert Emergency Communications after staff told the board their 911 center earned tri‑agency accreditation; Division Chief Stanley Harris reported that staff answered roughly 32,000 emergency calls in 2025 and credited 19 life saves and one successful birth assisted by dispatch. Staff and the board thanked dispatchers and quality assurance staff.
Separately, shelter staff highlighted a temporary adoption promotion (reduced adoption fees through March 17) and noted the shelter had reached a milestone of 4,000 adoptions.
These items were presented as non‑action recognitions early in the meeting and did not require board votes beyond formal proclamations and citations.
