Commissioners praise new recreation center, honor fallen servicemember and review infrastructure fixes

Deputy city staff updated the commission on two operational items: (1) the Federal Railroad Administration visited earlier in March to review timing equipment related to a proposed quiet‑zone; the city is awaiting a formal FRA report before deciding next steps, and (2) an emergency roadway closure at Highway 17 and Cypress Gardens Boulevard occurred after crews uncovered a 7–10 foot underground void and a separated joint in a 60‑inch stormwater pipe; DOT and city crews coordinated a temporary repair and reopened the intersection by the morning peak, with DOT planning a permanent night repair.
Staff also reported that of two federal appropriation requests the city submitted, Congressman Franklin's office selected the Willowbrook Road project for submission in its list of community funding candidates; the city continues to pursue additional federal dollars to match existing allocations.
In staff recognition, Public Works Director Britney Hart was honored by the American Public Works Association West Coast chapter with a young‑leader award for modernizing systems and improving departmental practices; the mayor was also noted to have received a 2025 community‑leader award from Citizens Bank and Trust.
