The Crown Point Board of Public Works and Safety approved the purchase of a used 1999 Kentworth American walk-in rescue vehicle for $55,000 after staff presented the opportunity.
Chief said the vehicle came unexpectedly from the Port County fire department; it has low miles (about 16,000) and is in good condition. Chief described the current dive truck situation as suboptimal and said retrofitting the Kentworth — chiefly fabrication to mount dive equipment and department graphics — will cost about $25,000. "If we were trying to go out today to buy a brand new vehicle that serves the same function, we'd be anywhere between 380,000 and half million," Chief said.
Alex confirmed the bill of sale meets legal standards and recommended approval. The board approved the purchase by voice vote. Staff said the vehicle should be in service after fabrication and outfitting.
