Community partner Pamoja Women honored for expanding after-school opportunities with RPS

At the March 17 board meeting, Rochester Public Schools and community leaders highlighted a partnership with Pamoja Women supported by a 21st Century federal grant that expanded after-school enrichment including robotics, sewing, soccer and an esports pilot.
During public comment on March 17, Shelley Springer told the Rochester Public Schools board that RPS received an award at a Pamoja Women Iftar recognizing the district—s partnership with the community group to expand after-school programming.
Springer credited Community Education leaders Amy Ike and Brian Feloon, and invited Brian to describe the partnership. Feloon told the board the Pamoja Women partnership, supported by the federal 21st Century grant at Ben Franklin, enables a variety of enrichment opportunities including soccer camps, sewing classes, robotics, drone club and an esports pilot at John Marshall School. He said the partnership also operates a food pantry and family education programming from its small local offices.
Board members praised the partnership as an example of community collaboration that supports middle-school goals discussed later in the meeting. Several directors encouraged board members to visit program sites to see direct impacts on students.
The board acknowledged the award and thanked Pamoja Women and district staff for their work expanding out-of-school enrichment.
