District staff told the meeting they will form several working groups this summer to study athletics consolidation, facility investments and CTE (career and technical education) maker spaces at the middle‑school level.
Dr. Harris said Jason Allen will lead athletic planning and that a working group will examine how signature schools affect teams, travel and facility needs. Board members asked specifically about Lincoln High and whether an athletic stadium upgrade was possible; Dr. Harris said district funds had been set aside and that additional money might be needed.
The district also described plans for middle‑school CTE maker spaces designed to provide hands‑on career pathway exploration aligned with 7–12 signature programs and central campus offerings. These maker spaces will give students exposure to options such as culinary, trades and applied technology before committing to specialized high‑school pathways.
On communications, the district outlined four guiding principles: recognize the psychology of change, bundle related changes to reduce change fatigue, ask for feedback when the district can act on it, and maintain consistent messaging. The district plans multilingual videos, targeted principal outreach, surveys and an extended marketing runway following any boundary decisions.
Dr. Harris and board members emphasized a phased approach to opening signature programs so staff training and program design can be sequenced and protective measures taken for students and educators.
Next steps: convene athletics and CTE working groups this summer; develop multilingual communication materials and schedule principal listening sessions and community feedback opportunities.
