Commissioners back support letters for courthouse window replacement; approve radio‑tower equipment grant application

Washington County emergency management director Deni Stempowski asked the board for letters of support on two grant applications: one to replace courthouse windows and a separate application to upgrade and expand the county’s radio tower infrastructure.
Stempowski provided a rough project estimate for the courthouse windows of $2,681,797 and said the county would be responsible for 25 percent of the cost if the grant is awarded — about $670,448. Commissioner Todd Ewen moved to provide a support letter contingent on the council’s approval of the required county funding if the grant is awarded; Commissioner Tony Cardwell seconded the motion and it passed.
Stempowski said the radio tower equipment grant would be 100 percent funded and would cover only the towers and associated equipment. The county currently operates two towers and plans to add two more; construction costs for tower sites would require a separate grant application. Commissioners voted to support the radio tower application by motion of Commissioner Cardwell, seconded by Commissioner Ewen; the motion passed.
The board’s approvals were limited to support letters and did not commit the county to fund construction beyond the conditional commitment on the courthouse window project. The courthouse estimate and the proposed county match were presented as rough figures during the discussion.
