The Avoyelles Parish School Board voted March 17 to approve the 2026'27 school calendar, selecting a plan that makes Veterans Day (Nov. 11) a holiday and sets Election Day (Nov. 3) as a virtual instructional day.
Superintendent Tutor presented two calendar options after the district calendar committee reviewed scheduling constraints and attendance patterns. She said the committee tried to keep the first semester complete before winter break and to avoid adding make'up days that would disrupt Thanksgiving or Christmas breaks. Tutor explained that making Election Day a virtual day would allow the district to count the day as instructional without bringing students into polling locations housed at schools.
Board members debated how to observe Veterans Day and how to minimize lost classroom time. Mr. Morrow moved to approve option two; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. Supporters said the option balanced honoring veterans and maintaining instructional days; opponents cautioned that shifting days could require future makeup days if weather closures occur.
The board next business item was approval of a one'year Title I software license and other routine consent items. The calendar vote is final for district scheduling; the superintendent said a budget revision related to other items will be forthcoming next month.
