Milford City Council voted April 21 to appoint Janet Cooper to a vacant council seat after a series of public interviews.
Vice Mayor Parrish nominated Cooper and the motion carried by majority vote following brief discussion praising the high number of applicants. Mayor Ralph Velardo Jr. asked Cooper to take a short seat and indicated the law director would administer a swearing-in. Cooper was also asked to serve on the Board of Zoning Appeals and the administrative services committee; Councilmember Sandy Russell was named to the personnel commission.
The council emphasized that the appointment fills a term that will appear on the ballot in November 2027. During the meeting several candidates introduced themselves to the public and thanked the council for the opportunity to serve. The mayor said he was encouraged by the turnout of applicants and told the audience the appointment process would not be the last opportunity to engage in city government.
The council recorded the vote and carried the motion; the law director confirmed the appointment will be processed under the relevant charter provisions. The council plans a formal swearing-in prior to the end of the meeting cycle.
