Midway ISD advances MHS gym and locker-room addition; schematic design shows ~$19.2M total cost

Midway Independent School District trustees reviewed schematic designs and budget estimates for a major athletics addition at Midway High School and approved the construction contract as part of the consent agenda.
Aubrey Moses of Huckabee, the project design lead, told the board the plan adds 23,881 square feet and renovates about 8,700 square feet — touching roughly 32,000 square feet of the high school. Moses said the addition will include a practice gym that seats close to 200 with telescoping bleachers, a cheer mezzanine, girls locker rooms, a coaches’ suite, two conference rooms and a team meeting room for film review.
Board members questioned how cheer and girls-wrestling lockers would be handled and how student movement between existing campus and MAC facilities would be managed. Moses said cheer lockers would be repurposed in nearby existing space, girls wrestling would be accommodated in the new addition, and campus circulation will rely primarily on existing corridors while the project stays within existing fire lanes.
The district’s construction-cost estimate at the end of schematic design was $16.4 million for construction; with soft costs, furniture, equipment and design fees the total was estimated at $19.2 million, about $600,000 under the current bond allowance. Neil Davis of Misana was present to answer cost questions and confirmed the schematic-level estimate and the plan to present a Guaranteed Maximum Price at the August board meeting after construction documents and bids.
The project timeline calls for design development with construction documents completed in early July for bidding and permitting and a goal of issuing a GMP at the August board meeting. Construction is expected to proceed through the summer of 2027.
The contract with McKenzie Mason Masonic Construction for the MHS gym and locker-room addition was listed in the consent agenda and approved unanimously by the board that evening.
The board will receive another update at its May meeting with more detailed site logistics and phasing information, and a GMP is expected at the August meeting before construction proceeds.
