Pitkin County advances 30-year Crown Mountain telecommunications lease with BLM

Pitkin County commissioners advanced an ordinance March 25 to authorize a 30-year communications-use lease with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for the Crown Mountain telecommunications site.
Drew Peterson, the county telecommunications director, said the Crown Mountain site is a critical node for public-safety radio, FM translators, fixed wireless broadband and the county's microwave backhaul network. He told the board the new lease will accommodate an approved Verizon tenancy and future site expansion needs.
Peterson said the BLM's review delayed the lease process but that the county has now been offered renewal terms that should allow site operations and tenant expansion for the next three decades.
The board scheduled a public hearing for April 8 and moved the ordinance forward; county staff said the final lease will be signed after the second reading.
