Lantern Festival, pentathlon and swim-program changes; pool heater repair delays some aquatics activity

Staff briefed the commission on upcoming events and program changes across the Community Services portfolio.
Lantern Festival: Staff said the two-day Lantern Festival will run March 21–22 in the Mission District with a carnival in the Mission Playhouse lot, a lantern ceremony and live performances; many program elements and vendor revenues are handled by partner World Journal LA.
Pentathlon and spring events: The All-City Pentathlon is scheduled for March 14 at Jefferson Middle School; the extraordinary pancake breakfast and egg hunt will be April 4. Staff described locations, times and volunteer opportunities for commissioners and youth ambassadors.
Aquatics and swim lessons: Staff reported active lifeguard and summer-leader recruitment and announced a plan to add private (one-on-one) and semi-private (two–four participants who know each other) swim lessons to provide individualized instruction and better serve neurodivergent participants. Semi-private groups will be required to register in person so staff can confirm participants and skill levels; registration windows were provided (spring registration and May resident/nonresident registration for summer). Staff said the private and semi-private offerings will be marketed to schools and through the department’s regular channels.
Pool heater: Staff described a water-heater failure at the pool that required replacement of heating elements and that a full replacement part has been ordered; installation takes about one day once the part arrives. Staff said they expect to reopen as soon as the part arrives and urged timely parent notification if swim classes must be canceled.
