York County School Board highlights student awards and Magruder Eco Club partnership with William & Mary

The York County School Board used its March 23 meeting to recognize student achievement and volunteer contributions and to spotlight a STEAM-focused Eco Club at Magruder Elementary.
The board honored student leaders and athletes, including seniors of the month and the Bruton High School swim and boys indoor track teams (noting the swim team’s fifth consecutive VHSL Class 2 championship and the track team’s state indoor meet victories). Coaches and school staff accepted congratulations and asked athletes to be recognized with photos.
In 'Accent on Academics,' Magruder Principal Lisa Ruffier introduced the Eco Club, a partnership with the College of William & Mary that provides hands-on STEAM experiences. Student Lelani Cummings said, “This helps me learn in fun and exciting ways,” describing field trips, nature journals and projects that connect classroom learning to the outdoors. Fourth graders Nora Carey and Trian Joshi explained activities such as nature journaling, planting seeds and observing plant growth.
William & Mary representatives described the partnership as a way to expose students to career pathways and deepen curiosity. Board members asked whether the program will continue; the principal said the Eco Club is in its second year and the division hopes to sustain it beyond the grant’s initial term.
The board paused briefly for photos with student award recipients before reconvening for later agenda items.
