Danville board honors student athletes and adopts March proclamations for social work, youth art, and music

The Danville School Board on March 5 recognized student athletes and coaches from George Washington High School and Bonner for Piedmont district championships and individual all-district and all-region honors.

Athletic director Mr. Dave Thomas introduced the Bonner girls basketball team and coaches; presenters highlighted academic standards for athletes (a 2.5 minimum grade requirement), the team’s first district championship and optimism for continued success. George Washington coaches and players were recognized for JV and varsity achievements across basketball, wrestling, and swimming; coaches named players who received all-district and all-region honors and noted program growth (for example, the wrestling program grew to 22 participants and required moving practice to the gym).

The board also adopted several proclamations. Members read and approved: a proclamation recognizing National School Social Worker Week (March 1–7, 2026), noting social workers’ role in attendance intervention and student supports; a Youth Art Month proclamation celebrating art education and planned displays; and a Music in Our Schools Month proclamation that covered concerts, assessment dates, and participating music faculty across the district. Dr. Angela S. Haristen, identified in the meeting as superintendent, joined board remarks celebrating the arts and social work staff contributions.

All proclamations and recognitions were approved by motion and unanimous vote. The board ended the business portion of the meeting by asking staff to follow up with reports requested by members and noting a work session would follow.
