Human Rights Commission plans expanded Community Service Awards, targets Nov. 4 ceremony

Commission staff presented a proposed, multi-month schedule for the city’s Community Service Awards at the Human Rights Commission meeting on March 9, and commissioners agreed to expand the nomination and vetting timeline and pursue an awards ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026.
Staff member Jeremy walked commissioners through a calendar that would include website preparation in April, an application period in May (the draft window included May 11–May 22 but commissioners discussed extending it to roughly a month), subcommittee review in late May–June, full commission vetting in June or July and plaque design and event planning in September–October.
Commissioners identified the subcommittee that will conduct the initial application review as Scott, Bobby and Beverly, with Commissioner Malachi joining the group so that four members participate without violating subcommittee rules. The subcommittee’s role is to narrow applications to a slate of finalists that will be presented in open session so commissioners can raise any concerns prior to final selection.
On timing and format, commissioners discussed whether to present awards at a council meeting or host a separate event. The group favored a special event tied to National Community Service Day and settled on pursuing Wednesday, Nov. 4, with the idea of beginning regular business at 5:30 p.m. and starting the awards ceremony at 6:00 p.m. Commissioners asked staff to place the schedule change on a future agenda so the commission can take a formal vote.
Commissioners also discussed outreach and publicity: using Engage Palm Springs, a council announcement and local media, and creating a web page with nomination details so nominators can easily apply. Jeremy said he would begin website work and contact the ad hoc subcommittee to set review dates.
No formal award selections were made at the March 9 meeting; the commission instructed staff and the subcommittee to follow the proposed timeline and return finalists for public review.
