Commission reviews public-art GIS and maintenance needs as Artscape installations move forward

The Palm Springs Public Art Commission spent a portion of its March 5 meeting reviewing progress on a city-managed GIS inventory, maintenance planning for the collection and installation logistics for Artscape in the Park.
Natasha and staff said a GIS layer for public art is being developed to list locations, maintenance history and whether items are in the commemorative or regular collection. Commissioners discussed using the GIS to flag pieces that have not had recent maintenance and the possibility of assigning commissioners to periodically inspect a subset of works.
On installations, staff reported that site pads for several Artscape pieces are in place or being poured; artist meetings are scheduled to plan installation logistics and dedications were tentatively planned for World Art Day if the pieces can be installed in time. Commissioners raised structural concerns about certain Sunrise Park concrete pads (some dating to the 1970s) and noted that footings and wind/seismic loading must be confirmed before installing very large sculptures; alternative sites were discussed as a contingency.
Documentation gaps were noted for sculptures on roads near the airport, where county or state agencies may be responsible for maintenance. Staff will continue searching city archives to determine ownership and proper inclusion in the city collection.
Other items: Mr. Berkeley reported that legal markups for an agreement tied to a project called "Art of Teaming" are complete and the agreement is now with the county; once both sides sign, dependent projects can proceed. Staff also said a previously approved pop-up "pinwheel" project will be sent to the City Council for deaccessioning in April.
