Dorchester District 2 leaders told the board March 9 that a recent district-wide recruitment fair drew 155 candidates, led to 33 recommendations on the event day and has resulted in 20 hires so far.
"We just did not tell people we're the coolest place to work. It wasn't just a slogan that day. We showed it," Executive Director for Personnel Scott Matthews said, describing the district’s Saturday recruitment fair and the districtwide effort to showcase schools and roles.
Matthews provided a vacancy snapshot for the 2026–27 school year: roughly 10 elementary openings, 14 high-school openings, 11 middle-school openings and 10 special-education vacancies. He said the district had about a 90%-plus intent-to-return figure in January and that contract season in April will provide final counts.
The district expects additional hires to be processed in the coming weeks and will send candidate contracts to the board as required. Matthews credited district culture, school-level engagement and coordinated outreach for the recruitment results and said the district continues work on pay-competitiveness relative to neighboring counties.
Board members asked how many candidates returned from nearby districts and how salary competitiveness affected retention; Matthews said location and culture draw some employees back to DD2 even if neighboring districts offer higher pay.
