Council hears NCICG on comprehensive plan but tables final approval

Kevin Lynman of NCICG presented the city’s updated comprehensive plan, describing the drafting process (work with the Planning Commission beginning in April, a Jan. 14 public hearing) and noting that minor edits resulting from public comment were incorporated into the latest draft posted to the city website in December.
Several council members said they had not had a chance to review the updated documents in the packet and requested printed copies for study. One member asked that council members take time to examine the material before deciding; another suggested the clerk print a hard copy for those who prefer paper. Given the lack of full review, a motion to table consideration of the updated comprehensive plan passed by roll call so the council could prepare for a future vote.
Why it matters: The comprehensive plan guides land-use decisions, infrastructure priorities and long-term development; tabling the vote gives council members time to ensure the document reflects community priorities and to consider whether any text amendments are needed before adoption. Kevin Lynman said the planning process included demographics, natural hazards, goals and implementation tasks and that only minor changes resulted from the public hearing.
The item will return after council members have had time to review the posted draft and receive any additional materials requested from staff.
