Coffee County adopts new neighborhood speed limits, stop signs and advances bridge work

The Coffee County Commission on March 30 adopted three traffic-control resolutions and approved engineering work to move multiple bridge projects forward.

Road & Bridge Superintendent Ryan Durst presented three resolutions to post 15 mph and 20 mph limits in Jacob's Creek subdivision, set a 30 mph designation for 16th Lane, and establish stop signs at the Zurich Road/24th Road intersection. Durst said the Jacob's Creek signs "will be posted right in the entryway" and that the resolutions are necessary so law enforcement can enforce limits. Commissioners noted the area includes a school bus route and that signs were the first step after residents requested traffic-calming measures. Each resolution passed by voice vote.

Durst also asked the commission to approve BG Consultants Inc. for a preliminary engineering study of County Bridge 165 for an estimated $32,245.75, with funds coming from the county's special bridge fund. He told commissioners the consultant estimated a 12-week completion timeline for the study, unless additional surveying is required. The motion to hire BG Consultants passed 5-0. Commissioners additionally authorized RFPs for design engineering services for bridge replacement projects at Oxen Road (bridge 169) and Third Road/T9 (bridge 156) so the county can apply for funding and keep its 10‑year replacement program on schedule.

Commissioners said the actions give the sheriff's office and county staff authority to begin enforcement and design work; no immediate construction funding was approved at the meeting.
