The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District board meeting on March 11 featured a student performance and a community donation for music education.
PBIS drama students presented selections from Matilda, drawing spontaneous praise from board members and district leaders. Principal Frell thanked staff, families and the boosters that support the program, and teachers on the dais asked the students to join the board for a photo. “You guys completely blew me away,” one board member said after the performance.
Later in the meeting representatives of the Peninsula chapter of the LA Philharmonic presented a $10,000 check to the district and suggested allocating $2,000 to each middle and each high school. Diana Chuligen, the chapter's youth music chair, and Monica Mallister, the chapter president, said the funds can also cover teacher requests for instruments, sheet music or equipment beyond the school allocations. They invited board members and staff to the chapter's Music in the Garden event on March 28.
Board members thanked the donors and highlighted the role of booster clubs and Prop 28 funding in supporting arts education. Student board members also reported recent student accomplishments and extracurricular successes during the meeting.
The board did not take formal action on the donation during the meeting beyond accepting the gift and offering public thanks. District staff said more formal allocation details will be handled through normal gift acceptance and accounting procedures.
