Council approves firefighter gear, sets 15 mph limit by Baldwin Lake and authorizes Renaissance Faire license application

The Greenville City Council on May 5 approved several routine and operational items, including a contract award for firefighter protective gear, a change to local speed limits around Baldwin Lake, and authorization to apply for a special license for the Renaissance Faire.
Council awarded the bid for Firefighter Personal Protection Equipment for the Public Safety Department to Phoenix Safety of Freeland, Michigan, in an amount not to exceed $21,857.20. Councilperson Mangus moved the award and Councilperson Johnson seconded; the motion was unanimously adopted.
The council also approved Traffic Control Order 26-01 to set the legal speed limit to 15 miles per hour on West Baldwin Lake Drive through the Baldwin Lake Beach Park area and East Baldwin Lake Drive through the Boat Launch Park area. Councilperson Johnson moved approval; Councilperson Seppala seconded and the motion passed unanimously. During later public comment, resident Linda Weger asked how speed violations around the lake would be monitored; the minutes record the concern but contain no details about enforcement mechanisms.
Council approved Resolution No. 26-07, authorizing an application for a special license in connection with the Renaissance Faire organized with the Greenville Area Community Center on September 19, 2026; Councilperson Seppala moved and Councilperson McBride seconded the resolution, which was unanimously adopted.
Earlier in the meeting the council approved a consent agenda that included approval of payroll for the pay period ending April 25, 2026 in the amount of $202,108.54 and an accounts payable report for the period ending April 29, 2026 in the amount of $100. The consent agenda also set a May 19 public hearing on the final project planning document for water system improvements related to a Drinking Water State Revolving Fund application.
The meeting concluded with a second statement of citizens in which Jeff Hines spoke about cursing at a public meeting and Ray Winnie raised a separate concern about an alias in use; the minutes do not record council responses to those comments.
