Northumberland County EDC notes $2.6 million VMRC dredging grant, schedules career fair and VA250 events

The Northumberland County Economic Development Commission met on Feb. 17 and approved the meeting agenda and the prior month’s minutes unanimously.
The County Administrator reported that the Virginia Marine Resources Commission awarded a $2.6 million emergency grant for dredging of the Little Wicomico River. The administrator said future efforts will prioritize a jetty infrastructure study to be pursued through federal funding requests, noting that the grant is intended to address urgent navigation or erosion needs rather than long-term construction planning.
In the Executive Director’s report, staff asked Commissioner Gregory Basye to review grant and loan documents before the Executive Director finalizes them and forwards materials to the county administrator. Staff also reported that an ACH payment request for the county’s MapHub account was sent to the county bookkeeper.
On community events and workforce development, the commission discussed the Northumberland High School Career Fair set for April 9 for students in grades 8–12; the county will coordinate with the Bay Consortium Workforce and local responders including county EMT, fire, the sheriff’s office and Virginia Marine Police. The commission is also planning participation in the VA250 Mobile Museum and a Heritage Fair, with coordination meetings scheduled with Hughlett’s Tavern for August–October.
Planning Commission representatives said Callao is researching installation of a cell tower and that the Planning Commission is exploring options for an animal shelter. John Kost reported the Planning Commission’s work on a "Pillars of Community Growth" survey intended to gather citizen feedback for the Comprehensive Plan, and staff outlined an approach to analyze the Poor House Tract and Dodlyt Road area.
Under new business, commissioners requested an update and the link to the Planning Commission’s digital zoning map, discussed investigating a grant to support branding of local seafood products, and asked staff to provide a list of grants opening soon with their intended purposes.
No public comments were received. The meeting adjourned at 6:49 p.m.
