Huerfano County adopts 2024 Model Traffic Code and backs Safe Streets for All resolution

Huerfano County commissioners on May 5 adopted Ordinance 2026-02, bringing the county into alignment with the 2024 edition of the Model Traffic Code and repealing conflicting local ordinances.
The ordinance, presented by county staff, updates local traffic regulations and establishes penalties for violations. A commissioner moved to adopt the ordinance and the board approved the motion on a voice vote.
In the same meeting the board approved Resolution 26-22, which commits Huerfano County to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets for All (SS4A) initiative and adopts a goal of eliminating fatalities and serious injuries on the county transportation network by 2050. County staff described the resolution as the county’s policy commitment and said the action does not itself obligate specific capital projects; it adopts a comprehensive safety action plan as a policy framework.
The vote on the resolution was unanimous. Staff engineer Ben Manigong was listed in the meeting packet as present for questions about the safety plan.
The measures place the county on record in favor of updated traffic rules and a long-range safety goal; any project-level work, funding requests, or grant applications tied to SS4A would be subject to separate decisions and budget approvals.
The board handled the two items during its regular agenda without extended debate. The meeting then moved on to routine procurement, finance and public comment items.
