The ABC Unified Board took time during its May 5 meeting to adopt a resolution recognizing May as Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and to hear presentations and recognitions from students and staff.
Miss Harris presented district AANHPI data and resources, describing graduation and chronic absenteeism rates for subgroups and stressing the need to interpret percentages for small populations carefully. "The theme is ‘Power in unity, strengthening communities together,’" she said, urging schools to use curated resources and classroom materials to honor and teach about AANHPI histories and cultures.
Following the presentation, the board read and adopted Resolution 25‑27 proclaiming May as AANHPI Heritage Month; the motion passed by voice vote 7‑0. Trustees praised the district's efforts to embed culturally responsive materials and highlighted school events where students had already engaged in observances and learning.
Earlier in the meeting the board recognized tenured teachers from multiple campuses and invited honorees to come forward for certificates and photos. Student ambassadors and ASB presidents from middle and adult schools presented activity reports and school celebrations that trustees said reflected district priorities for student engagement and leadership.
Next steps: the board encouraged schools to continue monthly, school‑level observances and for staff to support attendance and targeted interventions for small groups with elevated chronic absenteeism rates.
