Solid‑waste staff to cut convenience center hours amid staffing shortfalls; county approves grinder purchase and winter‑storm costs

County solid‑waste staff told the budget committee on May 4 that the convenience centers will remain open seven days a week but shift from 10‑hour to 8‑hour operating days starting in June or July because the department lacks enough attendants to staff longer shifts.
"We couldn't get more people, so we're gonna go—June July 6, I think, is when we're gonna do it. We'll cut the centers back to 8 hours a day and reallocate the people so we'll have enough people to still do what we need to do," Matt Nolan said. He added that centers require multiple attendants to cover 10‑hour shifts seven days a week and that staffing shortages make maintaining current hours impractical.
Separately, the committee approved a $1,000,000 amendment to the solid‑waste budget to cover expenses from Winter Storm Fern, funded from the solid‑waste fund balance. The committee also approved a late‑file capital appropriation of $1,292,224 from the solid‑waste sanitation fund to purchase equipment, including a replacement horizontal grinder—the current unit is roughly 21 years old. Staff said they will research whether FEMA will reimburse replacement costs; they have previously pursued FEMA reimbursement for interim contract use and parts but were unsure if full replacement qualifies.
The convenience center hours change and the capital purchase were approved by unanimous voice vote.
