Oldham County adjusts nonprofit grants so every applicant receives at least $1,000

Oldham County Fiscal Court approved recommended grant awards for 24 local nonprofit applicants and amended the distribution on May 5 to make every award at least $1,000. Grants coordinator Caroline Shading read the recommended awards, which totaled roughly $74,956 before the amendment.
Judge Executive David Vogel proposed raising several of the smallest awards so no organization received less than $1,000. "Can't we just say make everybody on here minimum $1,000?" Vogel asked during the discussion; the court agreed and adjusted the total award pool to about $75,411.50 to keep within the overall grants budget.
Magistrates described the committee’s review process as averaging recommendations supplied by committee members and noted that the grants program has limited annual resources. One magistrate asked whether allocations could reflect bias; other members said the committee’s averaging process and deliberations drive the recommendations.
The approved awards list includes civic, youth, arts and health organizations; staff said the $75,000 program budget includes a $30,000 allocation to Tri-County and that final disbursements would follow administrative review. The court’s motion to adopt the amended award list passed by voice vote.
