Commission approves piggyback for Gary street repairs, OKs July 4 street dance closures

Highway Superintendent Jamie Broksieck told the board the City of Gary’s quoted mix for a sewer project was not rated for heavy traffic, so he increased the specified quality for the county work. Broksieck presented quantities and line-item quotes that together amounted to approximately $175,000 for the work discussed (including milling and new material for the block-and-a-half on Coteau and sections of Laura Street). Commissioner Harry Mewherter moved to approve piggybacking off the City of Gary’s quote and contract; the motion passed unanimously.
Separately, the community group Gary Givers requested that Coteau and Laura be closed for a street dance on July 4, 2026. The board approved the street closures (motion by Judith Homan, seconded by Harry Mewherter), with all present commissioners voting yes.
Mayor Mike Fieber of Goodwin also asked about ordering "Slow Moving Children At Play" signs for Goodwin; Broksieck said he would order the signs and follow up with the mayor.
Next steps: County staff will coordinate contract details and scheduling with City of Gary engineers and notify affected residents of the approved July 4 closures.
