Board recognizes Governor's Volunteer Service Award recipients

The Burke County Board of Commissioners recognized the 2025 Governor's Volunteer Service Award recipients during its June 16 meeting.
Brownie Rochefort of Volunteer Burke introduced the program and explained the county role in collecting nominations for the statewide award. Alicia Wilson (introduced by the chair to present recipients) called forward volunteers and described their contributions: Doug White (Outreach Center volunteer serving seniors), Jasper Hemphill (Red Cross responder and Burke Literacy Council volunteer), Joyce Petit (long‑time office volunteer with Amoram), Julie Dickinson (volunteer at J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center) and a group from Salem United Methodist Church that supports residents and special events; Caroline Avery of Burke United Christian Ministries was noted as absent.
The chair thanked the volunteers and presented certificates or noted presentations would occur at a subsequent meeting. Commissioners praised the volunteers’ commitment and the county’s volunteer coordination efforts.
