Hall County to put dissolution of Weed Control Authority on the ballot

The Hall County Board of Commissioners voted to place a ballot question before voters to dissolve the Hall County Weed Control Authority Board, approving a resolution (No. 26012) to be submitted to the election commissioner.

The decision followed a public hearing in which Rob Schultz, Hall County Weed Superintendent (speaker 16), reviewed the history and role of the local weed board and Chad Gideon (speaker 15), a Hall County Weed Board member and landowner, urged the board to retain the locally driven program. Schultz described the local board’s long history, its role working with the Nebraska Weed Control Association and the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, and the weed authority’s responsibilities under the Nebraska Noxious Weed Control Act.

Despite public testimony in favor of retaining the board, a commissioner (speaker 10) moved to put the question for dissolution before voters, citing estimated cost duplication and recruitment challenges for the elected weed board. The motion identified potential annual cost savings (cited in discussion around $5,000) and argued that county operations could absorb the duties. After debate the board approved the motion by a 6–1 vote.

Supporters of the local weed board said local authorities provide targeted outreach, enforcement when necessary, and specialized knowledge about species such as phragmites and purple loosestrife. Chad Gideon said local boards are uniquely positioned to deliver cost-effective, locally tailored management and that recruitment efforts are under way to fill vacancies.

The action sends resolution No. 26012 to the election commissioner to be placed on the ballot; final timing and ballot language will follow the county’s normal election procedures.
