Zoning board allows two residents to keep backyard hens under special exceptions

The Monroeville Zoning Hearing Board on May 6 granted two special-exception permits allowing residents to keep up to four hens on their properties.
Samantha and Matthew Buer asked for permission to install a coop and keep no more than four hens at 504 Shoemaker Drive. Samantha described a 13-foot by 3.5-foot run and a roughly 3.25-by-2.5-foot coop, said the birds are pets intended for household egg use and composting, and said they do not plan to sell eggs. Board members asked about odor control, enclosure size and neighbors; staff confirmed notices were sent to property owners within 300 feet and no objections were registered.
Tynesha Allen requested the same special exception for 410 Bruner Drive; she said her coop is already installed, the birds have been kept for about three-and-a-half years, waste is managed via compost and the property is shielded from nearby houses by a privacy fence. Allen said immediate neighbors were not present and she had not received complaints; the board approved her application.
Both applications were approved by unanimous voice vote. The board’s approvals are special exceptions under the applicable section of the Monroeville zoning ordinance and allow the residents to keep four hens each, subject to any operational conditions imposed by staff during permitting.
