Butte-Silver Bow Parks & Recreation told the board March 9 it will begin charging families $20 per student for senior banners, an amount staff said covers less than half of the department’s per-banner cost.
Shawn Fredrickson reviewed an attachment showing that hanging more than 400 vinyl banners last season cost the county about $9,285. Parks staff calculated the total cost per banner at roughly $65; because many banners feature two students, the department will charge $20 per student (about $40 per banner). Fredrickson said the school district does not contribute to the project; schools will offer options for families with hardship.
Ristene Hall expressed concern about charging for services that are in part funded by taxpayers. The board did not vote on the fee at the March 9 meeting; Fredrickson said the new fee would take effect starting this graduation season.
The attachment cited cost support from Roads/Parks and County Shops divisions for installation labor and materials.
