Superintendent John Ferguson presented the Scott County School Board with an overview of a Commonwealth Institute analysis of the proposed 2026–28 state budget and its potential implications for local K–12 funding. The hearing, held March 3 at the Scott County Career & Technical Center, was convened to receive public input on the proposed 2026–2027 school operating and cafeteria budget.
Ferguson summarized the Institute's Appendix A, which compares the introduced budget and the House and Senate money-committee proposals across areas such as tax policy, Medicaid and behavioral health, and K–12 funding. He noted the document is an analysis and set of recommendations and emphasized that "nothing has been finalized" for the biennium. Using the Institute's figures as examples, the appendix shows introduced per-pupil amounts at $9,477 for FY27 (the House proposal cited FY27 at $9,876) and provides a range of statewide adjustments the board may see as the budget process continues.
Board Chair David Templeton presided; Superintendent Ferguson and board clerk Sherri Christian were present. Also in attendance were Assistant Superintendent Jason Smith, School Attorney Will Sturgill, members of school staff, and visitors including Fort Blackmore Primary Center of Excellence Principal Stacy Wood and staff. The materials were provided to the board as Appendix A to the hearing documents.
The board opened the meeting for public comment and recorded that there were no speakers. With no further business, Templeton adjourned the budget hearing at 6:22 p.m.
The hearing produced no motions or votes. The appendix presented by Ferguson remains an informational summary of statewide proposals; any formal changes that could affect local funding will depend on final action at the state level and subsequent local budget decisions.
