The Dorchester County Council on April 21 approved a range of administrative and finance items, confirmed interim poll decisions on grant applications and heard public opposition to a proposed Route 336 closure.
The Council unanimously approved a County property tax exemption requested by JoAnn Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of Habitat for Humanity Choptank, for 27 properties for tax year 2026-2027 totaling $3,396.51.
Due Trieu, Recreation & Parks Director, asked the Council to proceed with the lowest quote from Hill's Industrial to replace a deteriorated pool pump that could not be repaired. The Council approved the $8,175.55 purchase, funded from the department's FY26 operating budget.
Nancy Jackson was unanimously appointed to the Agricultural Land Preservation Board to replace Jeremy Reid, who declined reappointment.
The Council confirmed three interim poll actions taken between meetings: a second Roots for Resilience grant application for $3,145,000 to support south-side marina shoreline protection (no local match; poll vote 3-0), which county materials say brings two shoreline grants together to total $5,023,877; an $11,156 Sex Offender Compliance & Monitoring grant application (no match) to fund part of a deputy's salary (3-0 poll); and an emergency purchase of a 2024 Chevrolet truck for Animal Control for $42,421 funded from the FY26 Contingency Budget (5-0 poll).
During public comments, residents Tommy Gootee, T.J. Abbott, David Beverley, Ted Abbott and Bonnie Abbott spoke in opposition to a proposed three-week closure of Route 336 for roadway repairs in the Worlds End Turn area. Councilman Ricky C. Travers said Delegate Thomas Hutchinson is working with the state to attempt to keep the road open during repairs.
Councilman Travers offered condolences for the passing of Bill Wise, calling him "a pillar of the community," and Councilman Detmer noted upcoming Chicone Village Day and the county's America 250 observance activities.
With no further business the Council adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
