Ionia board approves sinking-fund projects including flooring, restrooms and water-main replacement

The Ionia Public Schools Board of Education on April 21 unanimously approved several sinking-fund projects, including districtwide flooring replacement this summer, restroom renovations at Welch, and replacement of the high-school water main.
Executive Director of Business and Finance Jammie Sprank presented a sinking-fund activity update through March 31, 2025, saying, "The total amount of Sinking Fund revenue was $9,000,569.21, while expenditures to date were $7,154,478.00." That fiscal overview accompanied project proposals presented by Mike Avery.
Mike Avery presented the Betley Flooring proposal and a Sourcewell carpet contract, which the board approved as the Summer 2025 flooring replacement. The board then approved base bids and write-ups for Welch restroom renovations and accepted the award summary for the IPS High School water-main replacement. All three motions were moved by President Yokom and carried on 6-0 votes after members offered support and brief acknowledgements.
The actions are part of continuing use of the sinking fund, a dedicated local revenue source noted by Sprank in her report. The board also approved several support-staff hires that align with operations and food-service needs.
Board members thanked Avery for his work on bids and project preparation during the board-comment period. The board adjourned at 7:16 p.m.; the next regular meeting is set for May 19, 2025.
