Deputy Superintendent Dr. Grace Park presented the annual Teaching & Learning Task Force update, telling the Board of Education that the district—s collaborative PLC-at-Work model and focused Areas of Emphasis have shown measurable benefits in student learning and narrowing achievement gaps.
Park said the task force met in October and again for collaborative learning rounds, used Smarter Balanced and local assessment data, and ran a staff feedback survey from Dec. 1–12 with 861 participants (770 teachers and 91 administrators). "Using the information from the collaborative learning rounds and student achievement data, the task force confirmed that our continued focus on a smaller number of areas of emphasis over time has benefited staff and improved student learning," Park said.
The presentation highlighted preferred professional-development methods identified by staff: modeled practice, co-planning and co-teaching, structured PLC release time, and targeted training. Park cited a sample SMART goal used in classrooms: by the end of the unit, 75% of students will be proficient or advanced in analyzing a central idea in grade-level informational text as measured by aligned CFAs and a CSA.
Board members praised the PLC approach and asked whether the district—s "yellow sheet" (the PLC operational guide) is publicly available; Park said the yellow sheet is provided to teachers and teams in schools but not posted on the public website, and staff agreed to review options for communicating implementation guidance more broadly. Trustees noted the district—s recognition on the California Honor Roll and praised steady gains on local and state assessments.
Park concluded that next steps will continue to emphasize a smaller set of priorities with aligned professional development, stronger instructional rigor, site-level customization of PD based on survey feedback, and ongoing monitoring of impact on student learning.
