Parents ask Wayne schools to tweak schedules so students can do SDA and spring sports

Parent Mike Farrell told the board that small changes—moving two practices per week by a couple of hours and avoiding scheduling games on two key performance days—would allow many students to participate in both activities without cost to the district. "If practice times could just be adjusted to work around the SDA schedule...it could allow these girls to participate in both sport and SDA," he said, adding that permitting dual participation could help retain students and bolster spring‑sport rosters.
The superintendent and several board members acknowledged the tension between performance scheduling and athletic calendars. Board members said they do not directly set team schedules but suggested administrators and coaches can coordinate or seek special permissions to reduce conflicts. "Maybe it could be placed in more of the off time between seasons," the superintendent said, and another board member asked administrators to look into scheduling differences between Wayne Hills and Wayne Valley SDA performances.
No policy change or formal motion on scheduling was recorded during the meeting. The discussion remained at the exploratory stage, with board members encouraging staff to confer with coaches and event organizers and report back at a future meeting.
