Committee to follow up on Sand Lake Boat Landing after DNR declines stewardship

Oneida County staff told the Public Works & Solid Waste Committee on March 19 that work on Sand Lake Boat Landing signage is imminent but stewardship options remain unresolved.
Ben Rich reported Interstate expects to begin installing signs with QR codes on or about April 15, and WPS is preparing a quote to run electrical power in case the committee elects to add cameras. Rich told the committee staff estimated running power could cost less than using solar power and that a camera service would carry an approximate $100 monthly fee. According to email correspondence between the former highway commissioner and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Rich said the DNR was not interested in taking over the landing.
Chair Ted Cushing suggested closing the landing if the DNR will not assume stewardship. Committee member Billy Fried said a private party might want to purchase the landing; Robb Jensen asked staff to determine whether the DNR would allow closing the landing and, if not, to explain the legal basis for that position. Rich reported the DNR referred staff to a DNR biologist responsible for boat landings; Cushing directed Rich to contact that biologist and to return with the cost to run power and with options for selling the landing.
What happens next: Staff will contact the DNR biologist, obtain power/camera cost estimates from WPS and any additional guidance on closing or selling the landing, and report back to the committee at a future meeting.
