AllJoy residents press board for local meeting, praise stormwater crews

Residents from AllJoy and Bluffton used the public-comment periods at the Dec. 11 Beaufort County Stormwater Utility Board meeting to press staff for greater local engagement and to thank crews for recent work.

Jim Lawton of AllJoy asked the board "to evolve towards at least one meeting South Of The Broad" so residents could more easily attend. The board acknowledged AV and staffing constraints for off-site meetings but said it would "look at that for the coming year." The board also agreed to push out meeting information through multiple channels once a date is set.

A second commenter, identified in the transcript as Mr. Wilson, praised the board and public-works crews: "this storm board rocks," he said, and thanked the board for ditch work that helped AllJoy weather Tropical Debbie. Mr. Wilson also raised concerns about recent beach activity—sand delivery and spartina removal—and asked which agency was responsible and whether proper permits had been used; staff said beach work was outside the stormwater board's purview and that cleanup efforts could be undertaken where appropriate.

Why it matters: residents asked for easier access to meetings and clearer communications about local projects and points of contact. Staff told the board they will announce the AllJoy point of contact and public meeting as soon as procurement decisions are final and would push information through multiple forms of outreach to reach residents who are not on social media.

The public commenters expressed gratitude for the county crews and urged the board to increase proactive local outreach and timely announcements of community meetings in early 2025.
