Washington County outlines highway building work, redirects bridge funds to paving; Bridge 238 change order $38,400

Washington County highway staff updated commissioners July 1 and July 15 on a series of capital projects, including building finishes, salt storage work, paving and a bridge change order.
Paul Eckert and Highway Superintendent Rick Voyles reported masonry work on the county office building is complete and interior work will resume. The mixed-salt building walls and slab pours are done; an 80-by-100 slab is planned for a salt building and aggregate bin walls have been constructed to 12 inches. Septic tanks for the site are being delivered and storm drainage additions were reported.
Officials said the county’s first round of paving (about eight miles) is complete. Funds originally budgeted for Bridge 61 — roughly $500,000 — will be applied instead to a second round of county paving because Bridge 61’s design is not yet finished. Bridge 238 on Main Street in Salem has a $38,400 change order for formwork; officials said work should resume next week and be completed by the start of the school year.
No formal additional appropriations specifically for these projects were recorded in the minutes during the July sessions, though the board approved routine claims and payroll. Highway staff continue to coordinate with contractors (Grabers, Temples) and utilities on gas line location and other site details.
