County insurance broker warns of likely 14.5% Anthem premium increase; final quotes due in August

At two July sessions, the county’s insurance broker said the current health carrier, Anthem, quoted a 14.5% increase to Washington County’s group plan, and that final comparative quotes are pending.
Zack Richards of Knapp-Miller-Brown told commissioners and the joint council the county’s plan currently insures 177 individuals, including children. He provided a risk breakdown of 51 low-risk claimants, 90 medium-risk and 36 high-risk claimants and said Anthem flagged high claims that drive the proposed increase. "Anthem quoted a 14.5% increase," Richards said. He reported that quotes had been requested from UnitedHealthcare, Nationwide Benefits and SIHO and that he expected final offers by the August 5 meeting.
Commissioners recorded a motion (and passage) to allow Richards to be placed on the July 15 agenda for further discussion; no contract decision was recorded during these meetings. Officials said they will review competing proposals when available.
The auditor and broker will carry the procurement timeline forward; commissioners did not record any binding contract changes at the July sessions.
