Board debates calendar options: spring break timing, snow makeup days and start-of-school trade-offs

The district superintendent led a comprehensive discussion of proposed calendar models for 2027–28, reporting 109 responses from staff, board members and families after outreach. The outreach highlighted three recurring concerns: start-of-school timing, spring-break placement and holiday alignment.

Stakeholders voiced competing priorities: some favored an earlier start (before Labor Day) to mirror neighboring high-school calendars and college timelines, while others emphasized preserving summer and aligning spring break to reduce childcare disruption. On inclusion, the superintendent noted that Passover and Easter do not always align on the calendar, so making spring break consistently inclusive is difficult: "Passover is not a Gregorian calendar. It moves," the superintendent said, explaining why a fixed week may not always capture all religious observances.

The superintendent proposed a snow-day makeup model that uses Presidents' Day (and a second February date) as the first makeup day, which he said would improve attendance for makeup days compared with spring-break makeups. He also recommended moving one PD day to reduce disruption after winter break and suggested the board consider contractual obligations (for example, custodians' workdays) before finalizing changes.

Board members asked staff to prepare calendar options that balance religious inclusion, childcare concerns and contract costs and to return a proposal for further review; a formal vote on the calendar was not taken at this meeting.
